ASDA - We hate waste of any kind

About ASDA

We hate waste of any kind

We want to reduce the amount of electricity, packaging and fuel we use and pass the savings on to deliver the best value products and services to our customers.

ASDA wants to make sustainable living more affordable for all and we were proud to be judged Britain’s greenest grocer in 2007.

Waste and Packaging

Our seven purpose built recycling centres helped us to recycle 150,000 tonnes of cardboard and nearly 9,000 tonnes of plastic wrapping in 2008.

Since 2005, we have removed 47,000 tonnes of excess packaging from thousands of products and achieved our target of reducing the weight of our own brand food packaging by 25% at the end of 2008. We’re working to remove a further 5% by the end of this year, a full 15% ahead of our competitors. This level of reduction leads the entire retail industry globally.

We aim to send zero store and construction waste to landfill by 2010.

Transport

We’re switching more of our road freight to rail and introducing double-decked trucks and fuel efficient, automatic gearboxes. This has saved 43 million road miles – equivalent to 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This represents a 40% reduction in fleet emissions since 2005.

Our local sourcing hubs helped us to take 8 million food miles off the road in 2008.

Energy

We will reduce energy requirements for our existing stores and distribution centres by 20% by 2012, based on a 2005 store model.

We will also reduce new store energy requirements by 30% by 2010, based on a 2005 store.
