Our proposals

The Development

The Heol y Mynydd site is a key location and our aim is to build an ASDA store that is both appropriate to the site and will complement Gorseinon overall. We are proposing a design that is attractive, inviting and functional.

Our Construction Team will use a wide range of recycled materials, timber from sustainable sources, concrete with reduced cement content and other sustainable features. Through using a range of energy saving tools and technologies, ASDA’s new stores are currently a minimum of 25% more energy efficient and emit 30% less carbon than those built in 2005.

What is ASDA proposing in Gorseinon?

ASDA first proposed a store on the former Mountain Colliery and Gorseinon Tin Plate Works site, between Cecil Road and Heol y Mynydd, in 2006. We want to bring this site back into economic use and have carefully re-designed the scheme in response to the feedback received at that time.

The ASDA store will provide local people with access to high quality affordable groceries and some non-food lines such as household goods and our award-winning George fashion brand. From extensive shopping surveys carried out by our planning consultants, it is estimated that over 75% of main food shopping is currently carried out in other towns with more attractive retail offers, such as Parc Troste and Fforestfach. This is damaging to the health of Gorseinon’s town centre and the local economy as a whole.

We are proposing to build a store with a 2,705 sq m (29,100 sq ft) net sales area and a total gross floor area of 3,243 sq m (34,907 sq ft). The store would have 332 car parking spaces, including spaces for disabled drivers and parents with children. The store would be a size in keeping with the town, but large enough to encourage more local people to shop in Gorseinon.

The store will be easily accessible by foot from the High Street, as well as by public transport and car. Our proposals are designed to fully integrate with, and enhance, the town centre.
